Key challenge: Global resource consumption and waste creation is increasing
Global resource consumption has long been on the rise and is estimated to triple from now until 2050. With the increasing consumption of goods, the amount of waste is also growing. In many countries, far too many valuable materials end up in waste incineration plants or landfills instead of being reused.

The status quo cannot continue. Decoupling economic growth from resource consumption is fundamental in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goal #12 on sustainable production and consumption.

This requires a transition from a linear, take-make-waste pattern on production and consumption in 
favour of a circular system in which all products are designed and marketed with reuse and recycling in mind. This is what we call a circular economy.

From March 4 until March 10, the international public-private partnership Danish Clean Tech Hub will be hosting Circular City Week in New York City for the first time ever. The event is an open collaborative festival for circular economy related events. The festival will focus on advancing the debate and driving awareness about the immense economic, environmental and social potential of a circular economy.
