At a glance

  • For the majority, the crop is in the ground. Some planting is ongoing in areas of the North West and Scotland, though ahead of schedule.
  • Water availability and potential restrictions remain a concern.
  • Early crops continue to be lifted, but demand remains limited.
  • Export demand remains strong, with Scottish material moving to Europe.
  • Increased interest in free-buy from both English and Scottish packers.
  • Trade in the bag market was subdued.
  • Prices for top quality increase as supplies become harder to find.

Weekly prices

2018 crop - Packing
  • There has been some increased demand for free-buy in both Scotland and England.
  • It is becoming harder to find good quality high baker fractions and overall prices rose slightly as a result.

England - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
Scotland - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
2018 crop - Bags
  • Demand remained fairly steady, though there were hopes of a pickup next week in the run-up to the bank holiday.
  • Prices for best quality chipping material keep rising as supplies continue to dwindle.
  • Average to low quality material appears to remain in good supply and prices have changed little for the lower end of the market.
East (Yorks, East Mids, Eastern Counties) - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
West (West Mids, Wales, North West) - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
South (South West, South, South East) - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
Scotland - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
2018 crop - Processing
GB - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
  • Most processors are still primarily covered by contract, with most orders consisting of repeat customers.
2018 crop - Exports
GB - All prices free-buy, ex farm, £/t unless otherwise stated.
  • Demand from mainland Europe continues to go from strength to strength, with potatoes making their way over the Channel
  • Both fresh and processing supplies remain in high demand. The majority of exports continue to be of Scottish origin.

These quotes are from actual free-buy trades collected by a weekly telephone survey of buyers, growers and merchants on a Wednesday and Thursday.
They give an indication of the range of prices achieved in the past week.
