Tropical Storm Elsa update (6 July)

06 Jul 2021 / Gulf Coast, United States

Elsa has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm and should make landfall around Tampa tomorrow morning (7 July). The Port of Tampa is closed, but Jacksonville, Port Canaveral, Port Everglades and Savannah are open.

Elsa is forecast to remain at tropical storm strength through the next 36 hours. It will continue to track through warm Gulf waters today (6 July) and may re-strengthen despite the combination of moderate southwesterly wind shear and pockets of dry air in the area. Rapid weakening into a tropical depression will then occur after its second landfall over Florida tomorrow. Additional intensification may occur late Thursday into Friday as Elsa re-emerges off the U.S. East Coast into the Atlantic Ocean, but this will be short-lived as it should transition to an extratropical state Friday into this weekend.

More ports across the eastern seaboard are likely to close as Elsa tracks north.
