Establishment of artificial reefs

23 Aug 2021 / Hong Kong

For approximately four months, artificial reefs are being established on the seabed within the area bounded by straight lines joining the following co-ordinates (WGS 84 Datum) from (A) to (D):
(A) 22° 20.027’N / 113° 58.662’E
(B) 22° 20.027’N / 113° 59.157’E
(C) 22° 19.837’N / 113° 59.157’E
(D) 22° 19.837’N / 113° 58.662’E

The artificial reef is cubical in shape with a height of about 3.5 metres and a base of about 8.1 metres by 8.1 metres. There is a vertical clearance of about 4.5 metres from the top of the artificial reef to sea level.

A yellow marker buoy fitted with yellow flashing light marks the position of the first artificial reef unit for the first month.

The particulars of the buoy are as follows:
Position (WGS 84 Datum): 22º 19.991’N / 113º 58.978’E
Shape: Pillar
Colour: Yellow
Light Characteristics: F1(5)Y.20s
Top Mark: Yellow “X”
Radar Reflector: Fitted
Automatic Identification system: Fitted

The works are being carried out by one crane barge and one cargo vessel. Two tugboats will provide assistance.

A working area of approximately 50 metres around the barge is established. Yellow marker buoys fitted with yellow flashing lights mark the positions of the anchors extending from the barge.

The hours of work are from 0700 to 2300 hours including Sundays and public holidays. Vessels employed for the works will stay in the works area outside the hours of work.

Diving operations for checking the artificial reefs are being carried out from time to time during the hours of work.

Vessels engaged in the operations display signals as prescribed in international and local regulations.

Vessels navigating in the vicinity should proceed with caution and keep clear of the works area at slow speed, bearing in mind there are divers working in the area.
