Heavy rain affecting port operations

18 Nov 2021 / Bay of Bengal, India

Heavy rainfall which began in coastal Tamil Nadu in the early hours today (18 November) is affecting operations at Krishnapatnam. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) saying peninsular India will continue to receive rain under the influence of a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.

The low-pressure area over south-east and south-west Bay of Bengal, with the associated cyclonic circulation, is likely to move westwards and reach west-central and adjoining south-west Bay of Bengal off the south Andhra Pradesh-north Tamil Nadu coast, triggering widespread rain over the region on today and Friday. There will be strong winds gusting up to the speed of 65 kmph over the Bay of Bengal and along and off the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh. Rough sea conditions to persist till Friday.

At Krishnapatnam, due to heavy swell and strong undercurrents in the channel, the port is in the process of shifting out all vessels to anchorage. Inward/outward movements have been cancelled from this morning. Cargo operations are suspended at all berths.
