Women working in the office Real World Work Experience Scheme

tomorrow's professionals Real World Work Experience Scheme

We aim to equip inquisitive minds with the professional knowledge and practical skills they need to go out and excel in their chosen careers.

Virtual work experience for aspiring law and business students

In 2020, we launched our first virtual work experience scheme, welcoming around 300 students who were unable to secure a work placement opportunity. This year, the Real World Work Experience Scheme is expanding to cover even more professional areas across the legal and business sectors, with the aim of ensuring more students know what to expect and can develop key skills ready for the workplace.

The Scheme has a fully live and virtual three day programme (27-29 July 2022), meaning students are able to learn from, and network with professionals safely from across the UK.

Why should I take part?

Functional knowledge and practical skills are key to success within the workplace. You will develop skills employers are looking for and start to understand how they are applied to the real world.

You will take part in a combination of talks, interactive workshops and practical work-based tasks.

Taking part in the Scheme will give you the opportunity to:

  • Gain insight into what working for a law firm or business is like
  • Develop transferable skills
  • Complete mock tasks that replicate real work activity
  • Experience lectures delivered by professionals
  • Expand your employability skills
  • Network with students and lawyers

Whether you are writing a Personal Statement, applying for a part time job, or exploring potential career paths, the Scheme will give you the examples needed to evidence your knowledge and skills.

This is a great opportunity to meet potential future employers.

Throughout your scheme you will meet:

  • Current lawyers in criminal practice, private client, and corporate law
  • Business professionals in marketing, accounting and management areas
  • ULaw tutors and our employability team

Throughout the week, you will be partnered up with a mentor who will be able to answer any of your questions. Our mentors are current University of Law students that will have been through similar situations themselves.

The Real World Work Experience Scheme will take place from 27-29 July 2022.

You would be expected to take part in all three days to ensure you can complete the collaborative tasks fully.

1 April – Applications open
17 June – Applications close
6 July – All successful applicants will be notified by this date
27-29 July – Real World Experience Scheme takes place

The Scheme is open to students who are:

  • Currently studying in Year 11, Year 12 or Year 13 at school/college (you do not need to be studying either Law or Business)
