€1million Fáilte Ireland investment to transform accessibility at the Little Museum of Dublin

Fáilte Ireland has awarded the Little Museum of Dublin a grant of more than €1 million to develop a universally accessible museum in Dublin City Centre.

The Little Museum of Dublin is located at 15 Saint Stephen’s Green, a Georgian townhouse owned by Dublin City Council. The expanded museum will feature new elements including a cinema, education centre and library, and a new lift to allow universal accessibility to all public areas.

Once completed, the new developments are expected to increase the capacity of the Little Museum of Dublin by 45%, and attract 215,000 visitors by Year 10 of re-opening, adding another unique attraction to the city’s tourism offering and expanding the evening offering of the area.

“The Little Museum of Dublin has been a wonderful attraction in our city over the past 10 years,” said the Lord Mayor of Dublin Caroline Conroy. “I am delighted at today’s announcement, which is sure to enhance the enjoyment of Dubliners and tourists alike for many years to come. The 35-year lease that Dublin City Council recently granted to the Little Museum, coupled with this funding from Fáilte Ireland, shows the confidence we all have that even a little museum can have a big impact.”

Orla Carroll, Director Product Development at Fáilte Ireland said “Developing attractions that are central, engaging and universally accessible is crucial for the sustainable development of tourism in Dublin City Centre. The funding of €1.03million under Fáilte Ireland’s Grant Scheme for Large Tourism Projects will transform The Little Museum of Dublin into a best-in-class example of an accessible attraction, available for everyone to explore when visiting Dublin.”

Sarah Clancy, CEO of the Little Museum, said “With a collection of over 6,000 publicly donated artefacts to tell the story of our city, over the past decade we have embraced our role as a people's museum. As our registered charity has grown, we have always been aware that we were not universally accessible for everyone. This is about to change. This milestone has taken trust and determination from our patrons in Fáilte Ireland and Dublin City Council. Once this building work is completed, our incredible team will continue to focus on providing a world class museum experience at the heart of Dublin.”

Dr Rhona Mahony, Chair of the Little Museum, said: “This funding will enable the Little Museum to build a really great accessible Dublin experience and to build a valuable cultural resource at the heart of our city for guests from all over the world. I admire and am grateful to Fáilte Ireland and Dublin City Council who have shown unwavering support to the important work that our team is doing on St Stephen’s Green.”

The Little Museum’s collection was created by public donation. Today the museum is the number 1 thing to do in Dublin on TripAdvisor.

Guided tours will be offered through French, German and Irish Sign Language while a multilingual app and museum map will include other languages.
