Tropical cyclone weakens but set to re-intensify

11 Jan 2022 / Cape York Peninsula, Australia

Alerts have been cancelled for Cape Flattery, Weipa, Arum and Skardon River as ex-Tropical Cyclone Tiffany approaches the western Cape York Peninsula coast. However, it will soon move into the Gulf of Carpentaria and begin re-intensifying.

At 3:30am ACST, Tiffany was a tropical low, sustained winds near the centre of 55 km per hour with gusts to 85 km per hour. It was located within 30 km of 14.6 degrees South, 141.7 degrees East , 175 km west southwest of Coen and 40 km north of Pormpuraaw, and moving west at 18 km per hour.

The ex-tropical cyclone is approaching the western Cape York Peninsula coast and will soon move into the Gulf of Carpentaria and begin re-intensifying. On Wednesday (12 January), it will move towards the eastern Northern Territory coast where Category 2 tropical cyclone impacts are possible.

Gales are expected to develop about Groote Eylandt from early Wednesday morning, which may increase to destructive winds with gusts up to 140 km per hour later as the centre of the cyclone approaches. Gales are not expected on the Northern Territory mainland within the next 24 hours, however gales could develop later on Wednesday.

Heavy rain is likely to develop across parts of the Arnhem and Carpentaria Districts from Wednesday and is expected to cause flooding of low lying areas and river rises.
