Planned harbour blockade

14 Apr 2022 / Newcastle, Australia

Newcastle Police have informed Port Waratah and other key Coal Chain stakeholders of a confirmed protest activity on Newcastle Harbour at Horseshoe Beach. The protestors intend to block the shipping channel 9am-5pm on Sunday 24 April using kayaks and watercraft.

The protest may impact shipping movements scheduled at this time. In the past, the port has suspended movements during similar incidents in the interests of safety for all involved. Previously, the protest group has engaged in disruptions to coal terminals, rail network, banner drops and infrastructure incursions.

If an incursion at Port Waratah does occur, it will likely be throughout the heightened period from 04:00 Tuesday 19 April until 07:00 Tuesday 26 April.

Significant Police resources have been committed to this operation and involve specialist Police units.
