Temporary establishment of acoustic monitors for ecological survey

30 Dec 2021 / The Brothers Marine Park, Hong Kong

With immediate effect and for a period of approximately seven months, one acoustic monitor will be temporarily established on the seabed in each of the following locations (WGS 84 Datum):

(A) 22° 19.556’N 113° 58.746’E

(B) 22° 18.767’N 113° 59.025’E

The acoustic monitor is an instrument for collecting marine mammal data. It will be fixed to a metal frame structure of pyramid shape with a height of about 2 metres and a base of 1 x 1 metre on the seabed.

Laying of the acoustic monitor will be carried out by one work boat, assisted by one guard boat. A working area of approximately 20 metres around the work boat will be established. The hours of work will be from 0700 to 1900 hours from Monday to Saturday. No operations will be carried out on Sundays and public holidays.

The vessels employed for the operations will not stay in the works locations outside the hours of work. Diving operations for retrieving data from the acoustic monitors will be carried out by the work boat in the above locations from time to time. Vessels engaged in the operations will display signals as prescribed in international and local regulations.

Vessels navigating in the vicinity should proceed with caution and keep clear of the works locations at slow speed, bearing in mind there are divers working in the locations.
