Asani unlikely to make landfall, weakening in 24 hours

Severe cyclonic storm Asani is over westcentral and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, some 260km southeast of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, 300km south of Visakhapatnam, 490km south-southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha, and 570km south-southwest of Puri in Odisha.

Moving at a speed of 10kmph, the cyclone is likely to move northwestwards till tonight (10 May) and reach the north Andhra coast and adjoining Odisha coast. Thereafter, Cyclone Asani is likely to recurve north-northeastwards and move towards northwest Bay of Bengal off North Andhra and Odisha coasts.

The cyclone may not make landfall on Andhra Pradesh coast and is likely to weaken into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours.

The weather system is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall at a few places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over coastal Andhra. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over coastal Odisha from this evening. Very high sea conditions were likely to prevail over west-central and adjoining south Bay of Bengal.

KAKINADA
Warning signal DC-II hoisted. Vessel movements at Kakinada anchorage port and Deepwater port suspended from noon hours yesterday (9 May).

KRISHNAPATNAM
Krishnapatnam Port Control is undertstood to have instructed all alongside vessels to keep engines ready due to Great Danger Signal No. VIII received from the Cyclone Warning Center. Due to a sudden shift in the weather conditions in the Krishnapatnam region, the port is in the process of shifting vessels to outer anchorage area.

Vessels in the region have been advised to take all safety precautions to brace for the storm.
