Hong Kong issues No 3 typhoon warning signal

Strong Wind Signal No 3 is in force in Hong Kong. The alert was upgraded at 11:25 AM from Signal No 1, meaning winds with speeds of 41 km/hr to 62 km/hr are expected. It will remain in force until 6 PM today.

At 11 AM, the tropical depression over the central part of the South China Sea was estimated to be about 580 km southwest of Hong Kong (near 17.2 degrees north 113.0 degrees east) and forecast to move north slowly closer to the vicinity of western Guangdong and Hainan Island and gradually intensify.

Under the influence of rain bands, there will be showers, thunderstorms and violent gusts over the territory. Showers will sometimes be heavy, and winds will be strong offshore and on high ground. The Hong Kong Observatory will closely monitor the development and movement of the tropical depression.
