Cyber Career Pathways Event: Inspiring Future Talent

Last month, twenty-two Sheffield Hallam University students delivered this year's Cyber Career Pathways event, welcoming nine schools and offering Year 10 pupils the chance to explore careers in cyber security and digital forensics through hands-on workshops, employer insights, and honest conversations about the many routes into the sector. Delivered in partnership with RTC North and CyberFirst, the day was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when higher education, schools and industry come together.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed, including the Sheffield Hallam students and staff, Victoria Speight from CyberFit, Claire Swallow and Bryony Cooke from the Yorkshire and Humber ROCU, Nik Kelsey from CyberFirst, and STEM Ambassadors Chris McLaughlin and Dave Timlin.

"Students were consistently engaged and the passion for cyber security was evident in those running the event. I would highly recommend this for any school to experience."

Mrs Blackburn, Sheffield Springs Academy

"Fabulously inspiring for girls in tech."

Mrs Williams, Tapton School

Yorkshire Water - ClimateQuest

Earlier this month, Matthew G and the team at Yorkshire Water welcomed 60 Year 8 students from Titus Salt School for a day of real-world problem solving. Students tackled genuine challenges currently facing the organisation - with more than one member of the team noting that some of the ideas put forward were remarkably close to solutions already being explored! Pupils also had the opportunity to speak directly with Yorkshire Water staff about their roles, including an infrastructure engineer, data scientist, telemetry analyst, cyber security analyst, cloud engineer and business analyst.

A huge thank you to Matthew and the team for giving their time and for creating such an engaging and meaningful experience for the students.

"The Y8 pupils really enjoyed the whole experience and found the tasks fun and engaging. They loved the interview section with different job roles and I was really impressed with how they got involved and were able to think up solutions for problems that Yorkshire Water currently face - especially the robot spiders! I think they were able to take a lot out of the day and it really built on the STEM skills we try to introduce in school, so it was really helpful for them to see this in a real-life setting."

CyberFirst Horizons

Designed for Year 12 students, CyberFirst Horizons, Delivered by RTC North, in partnership with the UK National Cyber Security Centre and The Hg Foundation, offers a transformative three-week experience which equips participants with essential skills, confidence, and insight into the UK's rapidly growing cyber and technology sectors. Preparations are now in full swing, and the programme is looking strong, with a fantastic group of industry partners and universities already confirmed, including YHROCU, Sheffield Hallam University, CyberFit, DePuy Synthes and Microsoft, to name a few.

A sincere thank you to everyone who has agreed to host the 50 students taking part - your generosity and commitment to developing the next generation of cyber talent is greatly appreciated.

If you know a school that has not yet heard about this opportunity or if you wish to get involved, we would love to hear from you.
