Dear colleague,

Cardiovascular disease is one of the country's most intractable challenges, and our region shoulders a disproportionately heavy burden.

That's why I was pleased to attend a Parliamentary event this month that highlighted innovations designed to tackle the disease and the truly enormous potential benefit to the economy of successfully preventing CVD: doing so would unlock around £12bn in productivity.

Locally, I'm proud that two Health Innovation North West Coast colleagues have been recognised by Pumping Marvellous, a charity dedicated to heart failure awareness, for their hard work and dedication.

In this month's newsletter we also highlight a series of webinars that offer learning and insight into treating and managing a range of cardiovascular conditions. The sessions have played to our strengths in convening specialists from every clinical area.

Lipid learning

Health Innovation North West Coast continues to collaborate with colleagues to improve lipids management as part of our focus on improved outcomes in cardiovascular disease treatment.

We've worked with NHS Cheshire and Merseyside to create a full schedule of educational tools to support lipids management, including a series of 'lunch and learn' webinars to support consistent and effective care. You can find recordings of these sessions on our website.

Double honour for heart failure team

A charity has honoured two Health Innovation North West Coast colleagues for their contribution to the improved treatment of people with heart failure.

Preston based charity the Pumping Marvellous Foundation has given Special Recognition awards to Senior Programme Manager Sarah Cockburn and Project Manager Michael Foo. Read more on our website

Shape our Excel in Health webinars

We support health and life science SMEs with a series of Excel in Health webinars that help companies sell products and services to the NHS.

We've previously covered such areas as procurement and commissioning, funding, investment and evaluation and real-world evidence. Now we need help to shape future webinars, and we'd value suggestions from innovators and commercial teams about what topics would be most helpful to explore.

NHS Innovation Accelerator 2026 Fellows

The NHS Innovation Accelerator launched its 2026 cohort at Digital Health Rewired, and you can find out more about the new Fellows on the Health Innovation Network website.

From pilot to spread and adoption: Women's health innovation

Around 70 colleagues from the health and care sector joined the Health Innovation Network webinar to discover how successful partnerships between FemTech innovators and the health and care system are improving outcomes for women and supporting national productivity. The Health Innovation Network has launched a monthly newsletter that brings updates from all 15 health innovation networks. You can read the first newsletter on the Health Innovation Network website and sign up via this link.

Intellectual property guidance

A series of bite-sized training videos have been published to support the updated Intellectual Property Guidance for the NHS in England, which was published in November. You can register on the NHS learning hub, where you will find a dedicated area for the guidance and supplementary materials. The videos will be useful both to NHS organisations and to innovators in industry.

There are five training videos in the folder training modules. The IP guidance will be updated regularly to reflect system needs. Please share feedback via IP@dhsc.gov.uk

SISU Health UK is an early warning health station designed to deliver accessible preventative health checks and lifestyle support and is the subject of the latest Health Innovation Network Meet the Innovator/ Adopter interviews.

Meet innovator Jez Ellerd-Styles, Director of Growth at SISU Health UK, supported by Health Innovation Manchester, Health Innovation East Midlands, and Health Innovation East.

Meet adopter Peter Broughton, Programme Manager at NHS Norfolk and Suffolk Integrated Care Board where they have adopted SISU to help identify peopl with hypertension.

Polypharmacy: Getting the balance right

The Health Innovation Network is hosting two sessions as part of the Preventing Problematic Polypharmacy programme. They are:

7 May 12pm to 1.30pm - Anticholinergic burden and the Medichec ABC calculator Masterclass. Anticholinergic medicines are prescribed for a wide range of conditions, and in older people the burden can be severe. The session is open to GPs, pharmacisits, nurse prescribers and other interested healthcare professionals. Register here.

12 May, 12pm to 1.30pm - NHS Business Services Authority polypharmacy prescribing comparators. The session will help primary care and other colleagues better understand the variation in prescibing several medicines. Register here.

Innovation Insights: The barriers to implementing AI in healthcare - and how to overcome them

12 May, 1pm to 2pm, online

Join the upcoming Health Innovation Network Innovation Insights session, hosted by Health Innovation East Midlands and the Midlands Clinical Senate, when the subject will be the key challenges to implementing artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, and the steps that can help organisations overcome them. The session will appeal to health and care professionals interested in introducting AI tools and technologies into clinical and operantional practice. Register here.
