01 Microbial contamination driving more recalls in 2024

Data from recall and crisis management company RQA suggests that recall incidents in the UK, EU, US and Australia are set to exceed those of 2023, with the primary drivers being Salmonella and Listeria.

02 Salmonella outbreak in France linked to cheese

A Salmonella outbreak in France linked to cheese has sickened more than 70 people between March and August of this year.

03 Domestic cats test positive for bird flu in Colorado

Six feline cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5N1) have been reported in domestic cats in Colorado during 2024. This stems from the area being hit hard with poultry and cattle outbreaks of the bird flu. Officials have advised that no human bird flu cases are linked to exposure to infected house cats, and the risk of H5N1 to the general public remains low.

04 Outbreak linked to plant-based beverages reports further death

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, a  third person has died in connection with an outbreak of Listeria linked to recalled plant-based refrigerated beverage products. There have been a total of 20 cases reported with 15 hospitalisations.

05 Stricter Salmonella standards for poultry proposed by USDA

With an aim to enhance food safety and decrease foodborne illnesses, the USDA’s FSIS is proposing stricter regulations in order to reduce Salmonella contamination in raw poultry products.
