01 FAO call to action as cases of avian influenza rise worldwide

With more human cases of avian flu in the Asia-Pacific region since late 2023, and the continued spread of H5N1 in birds and dairy cattle in the US, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has called for greater regional efforts to combat a rise of the disease. The US poultry industry also continues to be hard hit this year with nearly 21 million birds affected to date, close to the total for all of 2023.

02 Patient counts in outbreaks linked to micro-dosing edibles and deli meats continue to grow

A total of 113 illnesses have been reported across 28 states which has seen 42 people hospitalised and two deaths in an outbreak linked to micro-dosing edibles. The Listeria outbreak linked to deli meats also continues to grow, with 43 cases across 13 states and an additional death.

03 Delays and food waste caused by UK border testing capacity

According to the SPS Certification Group, a cross-sector group representing the food industry and NGOs, has written to the UK government highlighting delays and food waste caused by the lack of laboratory capacity in the British border control system.

04 Europe struggles with olive oil fraud

A rise in olive oil fraud has been seen across Europe in recent months which was triggered by scarce supplies and increased prices. This has had a knock-on effect on both producers and consumers.

05 UK supermarket trials higher freezer temperatures

A UK retailer Morrisons have turned freezers up to -15 degrees across 10 stores in a bid to reduce carbon emissions, save energy and lower costs. This is in collaboration with the "Move to -15 degrees Coalition".
