01 Europe raises HPAI alert level a notch

France, Germany and the UK have raised the HPAI risk level to ‘moderate’ as migratory birds arrive, and detections have ticked up in both wild birds and poultry farms. In the US, 1.8M chickens have been culled in Utah in the first detection in the state since Nov ‘23. 

02 US Listeria recall grows to almost 5,000t of products

The recall of meat and poultry products reported on last week has expanded to almost 12 million pounds with numerous prepared products including salads, sandwiches, recipe dishes and meal ingredients being implicated, such as pasta sauces in Canada. No illnesses have yet been reported in connection with these products.

03 Salmonella outbreak in Netherlands sickened 171 people while a separate Salmonella outbreak under investigation Sweden

A Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak that affected 171 people in the Netherlands has been traced to eggs using whole genome sequencing (WGS) in the investigation. This has been the largest Salmonella outbreaks ever recorded in the Netherlands. Elsewhere, officials in Sweden area investigating an outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis with possible links to imported eggs from Ukraine.

04 Over half of groceries packaged in 'unnecessary' plastic in the UK

According to a new report, 51% of food and drink items sold in supermarkets in the UK are packaged in unnecessary plastic.
