Dr Elisabetta Verderio Edwards
Dr Elisabetta Verderio Edwards (Eli) is a Reader and Associate Professor of Medical Biochemistry at NTU's School of Science and Technology. She is also a Research Coordinator for Allied Health Professions, in addition to being a registered Pharmacist and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Dr Edwards has an impressive international profile, strengthened by her affiliation with the University of Bologna and collaboration with prestigious external organisations such as the CNR Institute of Neuroscience in Milan, Italy.
She is known for her research on the transglutaminase family of enzymes in pathology as protein cross-linkers and in tissue repair, encompassing areas such as fibrosis, cancer, and neurodegeneration. More recently, her research team has become experts on the isolation and characterisation of nano-sized extracellular vesicles from cells and biological fluids for the development of novel theranostics, work which has also involved collaborating with the Anthony Nolan Cord Blood Bank.
“With support from Tony Marmont's personal philanthropy, my group at NTU has had the opportunity to study the content of extracellular vesicles taken from mesenchymal stem cells. We have identified pro-neuronal survival factors which may help control and slow down neurodegeneration and be new therapeutic targets. We would love to be able to complete this interesting project and we are so grateful for every support received.”
In 2022, Dr Edwards led the publication of a major research article in Progress in Neurobiology, which only publishes ground-breaking original research.
